Overview
Who’s Eligible: Young Writers (13-19)Tooltip
Piece Length: 50-500 words

We play music at weddings and funerals, at coronations and political rallies, in headphones and over speakers. In films, music can build suspense or resolve the moment; at night, music can lull us to sleep. “ANYTHING can be a song seed,” writes former Write the World Guest Judge Avanti Nagral

So, dear writers, for this competition, will you devise a melancholy melody or an electrifying tune? Do you strive to make your reader, or your listener, pause—or make them dance? Whichever approach you choose, this is your chance to write a song of your own—and record it if you’d like! This month, we’ll select two winners, one for best lyrics and another for best performance.

Pro tip: As you begin, take a moment to look through your favorite songs—your Spotify playlist, vinyl collection, or iPhone list. What techniques do you notice in your favorite songs’ lyrics? What do your favorite songs have in common? From catchy refrains to metaphorical melodies, music is filled with craft techniques that can inspire and enrich our own authentic works.

**PRIZES**

Best Lyrics and Best Performance Winner will each receive $100. Best Peer Review will receive $50.

In a sentence or two, how would you summarize what this song is about and/or the impression you are left with after reading/hearing these lyrics?

This song effortlessly conveys what it is like to be attracted to someone who you know would never feel the same way, and in this case this scenario is same-sex attraction. This song is so relatable, charming, and poignant and captures the very essence of this feeling, and I love it so much!!

In a sentence or two, how would you summarize what this song is about and/or the impression you are left with after reading/hearing these lyrics?

Appreciate our world. The song invites us to 'fly up', therefore remove ourselves from our own perspective to view ('see') the earth from above and the beauty of it.

In a sentence or two, how would you summarize what this song is about and/or the impression you are left with after reading/hearing these lyrics?

This song feels like a mix of longing and heartbreak. It is about wanting someone who does not see you the same way, even though you give them every reason to.
